Good communications are absolutely essential for the efficient provision of healthcare. The Stockholm
County Council has more than 600 healthcare units that send information back and forth to each other
daily. This information is often of business-critical importance, for example patient information. SLLnet
is used to send test results, e-prescriptions and X-rays, among other things. This puts high demands on
availability and capacity.
Cygate has responded to this challenge by building SLLnet, a network that links care providers and
related stakeholders to each other and the outside world. The idea is that the Stockholm County
Council buys a service rather than just cabling and infrastructure. This enables the County Council to
focus on its main task: providing the residents of Stockholm County with first-class healthcare.
A network for the entire County Council The Stockholm County Council, with 26 municipalities
and nearly 1.9 million inhabitants, is itself a pioneer in fast and secure networks between the
major hospitals. But when it came time to purchase the most recent network, they chose instead to
purchase their communications in the form of a service from Cygate.
Together with TeliaSonera and Stokab as subcontractors, Cygate has built an extensive infrastructure.
The people at the healthcare units do not need to understand how the system works.
Instead, they purchase a complete network service customized to meet their specific needs. The service
is supplied with various capacities and service levels (SLA), depending on the requirements of the
different healthcare units.
Common connection outward Everyone connected to SLLnet automatically has very high-speed Internet access. They also have access to Sjunet, the nationwide network that interlinks all county councils and major healthcare suppliers, such as Apoteksbolaget.
Operational needs
Direct access to central information, such as medical records and images, is absolutely essential for the effi cient operation of emergency hospitals and similar healthcare units. That is why they have high capacity and a service level (SLA) with a guaranteed availability of 99.95% on an annual basis. Beyond basic communications, those who are connected to SLLnet can order various add-on services that are tailored to the particular needs and characteristics of their operations. The available functions include, for example, the ability to prioritize business-critical traffi c, transmission of telephony, virtual networks and multicast for image transmission. | For users at smaller healthcare units such as family doctors, district nurses and hysiotherapists, SLLnet above all offers a cost-effective solution for connection to the Internet and Sjunet. All units are connected to SLLnet to facilitate the exchange of information between different healthcare units, for example when a patient visits several different care providers for the same ailment. SLLnet is also used for centralized handling of medical records and storage of treatment details and X-rays. |
SLLnet in brief
The core or backbone of SLLnet consists of six nodes with very high capacity (10 Gbps). The core network also has about 55 other nodes with a capacity of 1 Gbps. The healthcare units that cannot connect directly to the backbone via Ethernet are connected via DSL lines. Most ISDN and X-line connections have been upgraded to newer technology with high capacity and availability in the new SLLnet. These DSL connections are based on equipment from Cisco Systems, while the backbone is based on equipment from Extreme Networks. SLLnet includes a number of several add-on services, such as traffi c prioritization, transmission of telephony, virtual networks and multicast for image transmission.
