Cygate supervises the Metso information network around the clock

The Metso corporation provides equipment and services for international giants, for whom a 1-day shut-down of production equipment can cost over a million euros. For Metso fluent data communications is vital. This is why the company selected Cygate as the supervisor for its data communications.

The significance of the Metso corporate is recognized also globally. It is the biggest manufacturer of paper machines and the market leader in mineral-treating devices. It is one of the leading providers of industrial automation, and what is more, an important player in the production of fibreboard techniques and industrial switches.

Metso sells its products and services to almost all parts of the world. The company has around 300 offices in over 50 countries all over the world, with around 26,000 employees altogether. Recently Metso has turned its focus especially to the fast developing markets of China and South America.

Of its employees around 22,000 use the Metso intranet, which contains control information, such as malfunction and status notifications, produced not only by humans, but by machines as well.

For the time being the data communications services are provided for Metso by one global operator and 15 local operators.

Metso offers its customers solutions and services that cover the entire lifecycle of the production process. Covering the entire lifecycle is an asset when optimizing and securing the efficiency and usability of equipment and production lines provided by Metso throughout their lifecycle. For example, the numerous functions of paper machines or the status and performance of valves used in the industry can be followed and managed remotely through the Metso Intranet.

In other words, the environment is challenging and the customers demanding. The connections must work, as reliability is a prerequisite for Metso business. For example, the shut-down of a paper machine is estimated to cost, depending on the paper quality, up to 50,000 euros per hour, which adds up to 1,2 million euros per day.

The Metso corporate has selected Cygate to manage its global data communications. In Cygate’s service center dedicated surveillants keep an eager eye on the status of the Metso network around the clock. The system of the service center combines market-leading network supervision technology, analysing, and reporting solutions.

The Metso IT function and its Help Desks located in various parts of the world can follow fault events through the secure browser-based SmartView interface.

In case a bearer network router happened to go down, Cygate surveillants act immediately by contacting the operator of the relevant subscription and also the unit’s contact person.

No time is wasted - according to the agreement between Cygate and Metso the former is to start correcting the fault within 15 minutes from its appearance.

Only positive things to say
The system was finalized according to the schedule within three to four months, including summer vacations, and it was launched in production at the beginning of September 2003.

After a few months of fine-tuning the service is now serving well.
